Benefits of Kefir

Regularly drinking kefir can have a number of benefits to your health, body and lifestyle.

Kefir is a fermented milk drink, similar to yoghurt but with a thinner, drinkable consistency. Its unique sour taste with a slight fizz is produced as a result of the fermentation process determines its flavour.

As well as being rich in probiotic bacteria and calcium, we have put together a list of some of the other benefits your could experience when consuming kefir on a regular basis.

Good for Digestion

Due to its richness in probiotics, kefir is thought to be great for promoting good digestion.

Probiotics which are found in a number of foods help to restore balance in the gut, helping your body to efficiently digest.

The fermentation of kefir is thought to help break down lactose in milk, meaning there is evidence to suggest that it is suitable to drink by those with lactose intolerance.

Promotes Healthy Bones

Kefir is traditionally made from cow’s milk is a fantastic source of calcium which is great for promoting strong and healthy bones.

Vitamin K is also found in kefir, which again, is a great nutrient for maintaining healthy bones, particularly as we get older and our bones get weaker.

Can Aid Weight Loss

With kefir’s ability to help rebalance the imbalances in your gut, there are grounds to suggest that introducing kefir into your diet is an effective way to help you lose weight.

Obesity has been linked to having an imbalance of bacteria in your gut, but whether it is the same strain of bacteria is unclear.

Teamed with a healthy diet and a good exercise regime, kefir may contribute to your weight loss journey.

Helps Reduce Inflammation

The probiotics in Kefir are also thought to have anti-inflammatory properties to help with diseases such as IBD or rheumatoid arthritis.

There have been some studies into the link between kefir’s anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, with some evidence into the properties of the probiotics found in the drink, but this is a developing area of research.
